I left on May 20th and planned to return on May 31st so I could start my job on June 1st... I fell in love with Europe and with traveling so I called in and begged to have my start date pushed back. It worked - I got to stay till June 28th and had the best time of my life :)
USA - Kansas City
Home sweet home :) My flight left at 9:10am - I had my brother Nick drive me up to the airport.
USA - Atlanta
To get to Rome, I had to make a connection in Atlanta. I was there for 4 hours before my flight left for Rome.
Italy - Rome
Thu 21 May 2009 06:45:05 AM PDTI landed in Rome at 8am on May 21st. I sat by two crying babies and got about 2 hours of sleep... but the excitement of being in Rome pretty much kept me up all day and I didn't feel tired at all.
I stayed for two nights (05/21/09 - 05/22/09).
Italy - Vatican City
Fri 22 May 2009 04:20:06 AM PDTI went to the Vatican on my second day in Rome (05/22/09) for the first half of the day. I only waited about 30 minutes to get in. It was magnificent, but it pretty much ruined the rest of the cathedrals in Europe for me :)

Italy - Milan
Mon 25 May 2009 06:58:30 AM PDTI didn't like Milan, so I didn't even stay one night. When I was walking into the hostel, a guy was coming out and he told me not to stay there unless I liked things really dirty. He had also just had his wallet stolen from him. I went to a nearby internet cafe and read the reviews for the three hostels in Milan. They all had stuff like "My friend was raped in the park across the street" or "I got mugged in the garden" and that was when I decided that Milan wasn't for me.
On the way back to the train station, someone tried to pickpocket me but I didn't have anything in my back pocket. When I got in line for tickets to Switzerland I had about 30 minutes till the train left. I got to the front of the line with plenty of time left, then a crazy man cut to the front and caused a big commotion. I missed the train to Switzerland but wanted out of there, so I caught the next train to a city I recognized - Florence.

I arrived from Milan at 10:30pm and all of the hostel lobbies were closed. Hotels were expensive, and most were full. I ended up wandering the city till 2:30am and finally caved and got a room for 40 euros (ouch).
Italy - Cinque Terre

Cinque Terre (Five Lands) is a set of five towns along the northwestern coast of Italy. You can hike between the cities along the cliffs, which is what I did while I was there.

Sun 28 Jun 2009 01:28:58 PM PDTI connected in NYC on the way back to Kansas City. I had a 4 hour layover, which unfortunately was not long enough to head to the heart of the city - the workers told me if I wanted to make it home that day, I shouldn't go. I'll just have to make a trip up there sometime :)
